What to plan before you book
Decide what the cameras are for before deciding where they go.
What you need to see
List the entrances, yards, car parks, tills and stock areas that matter, and whether you need to recognise faces, read number plates or simply see activity. Each needs a different camera and position.
Where the footage is kept
Decide where the recorder will sit, how long footage should be kept and who can view it. Keep recordings only as long as you need them; many businesses keep around a month unless an incident needs saving.
Viewing away from the site
Remote viewing needs a reliable internet connection with enough upload speed, especially for several high-definition cameras. Check the broadband at the site as part of the plan.
Lighting and power
Cameras see poorly into bright light and very dark corners. Note where security lighting exists, and remember network cameras can be powered through their data cable.
Good to know
Cameras that see beyond your boundary
The ICO’s guidance is that home CCTV capturing images beyond the boundary of your property, such as a neighbour’s garden or a public path, brings data protection duties. Aim cameras at your own property wherever you can.
Signs for businesses
A business using CCTV should put up clear signs saying recording is taking place and who to contact, and be ready to deal with requests from people for footage of themselves.
Footage people can use
Footage is only useful if it is clear, correctly dated and timed, and easy to export. Check the recorder’s clock and practise exporting a clip before you need one.
Part of a wider system
CCTV works best alongside alarms and access control. Integrated systems let you see what triggered an alarm or who came through a door.
